NASCAR Driver, Keynote Speaker

At the age of 17, Reed made the long move from Bakersfield, CA to North Carolina, to surround himself with the racing community. In 2011, Reed was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and told that he would never race again. Instead of giving up, Reed found Anne Peters, MD, of USC’s Clinical Diabetes Program in California, who assured Reed with hard work he could still race. Reed implemented lifestyle changes that included a strict diet and exercise program, the use of devices to provide on-track data and reporting all of this information to his medical team in California. Focusing on his commitment and determination, Ryan has set records and compiled an impressive list of racing accomplishments. Outside of his racing, he puts his passion for racing into “Ryan’s Mission,” to help build awareness and support for people with diabetes around the world. In 2014, he became a full time NASCAR XFINITY Driver with Roush Fenway Racing. In his NASCAR XFINITY career, he boasts of two wins, 7 top 5 finishes and 27 top 10 finishes. To date, Ryan is the first and only NASAR driver living with type 1 diabetes to have ran a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. With more free time in 2019, he is working bring support and awareness back to the diabetes community.

DR. JAKE KUSHNER

Baylor College of Medicine

Dr. Jake Kushner is a McNair Medical Institute Scholar and an Associate Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine. For 6 years he served as Chief of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. His overarching career goal is to help children, adolescents, and young adults with type 1 diabetes and other endocrine disorders to live long, healthy lives. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Kushner earned his medical doctorate from Albany Medical College followed by pediatrics residency at Brown, pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston, and a 5-year research fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center (both of Harvard Medical School). Prior to arriving at the Baylor College of Medicine Dr. Kushner was at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The overall goal of his basic science research program is to enable regeneration of the insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cells as novel therapies for diabetes patients. 

 

DR. PIERO POLICICCHIO

Air Force Inc

Dr. Piero Policicchio (friends just call him Piero), has been practicing family dentistry in Holland, Michigan and surrounding cities for over 30 years. In treating patients, Piero uses cutting-edge technology combined with patient education and high-level patient involvement. Born and raised in Dearborn, MI, Piero received his degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. He is the inventor of Dental Air Force and CEO of Air Force Inc. His latest clinical trial studies using his Dental Air Force system versus toothbrush and floss on diabetic patients showed a reduction in HbA1c (diabetic blood marker) by over 1% in conjunction with periodontal therapy. Dr. Piero has developed a periodontal program to help with pathogens that standard protocols have not been able to eradicate. Piero is passionate when he speaks about the most devastating disease on the planet - periodontal disease.

Piero has published many articles on periodontal health related to heart disease, respiratory health, diabetes, strokes, and other systemic diseases. He is the former executive editor for the “Journal of Experimental Dental Science,” an international speaker, contributing author to Hospital Infection Control: Clinical Guidelines and the author of Never Brush Your Teeth Again!

Jessica Davenport, BS, is the founder and owner of Wellness Dreamer, a health and wellness company she created in 2017. Jessica holds a Bachelors degree in Wellness Leadership from the University of South Florida. She is a certified Health & Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches and a certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise. Jessica has worked in the health and wellness industry for 11 years and has held positions with a variety of companies ranging from a global human capital management (HCM) software company to one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States. Prior to founding Wellness Dreamer, she was the Wellness Specialist for PSCU, a Credit Union Service Organization where she managed all the wellness programs for over 1700 employees. In 2016, Jessica was instrumental in helping PSCU become one of the first companies in the US to receive the coveted Health Champion Designation from the American Diabetes Association.

 

Her passion for diabetes education and advocacy grew exponentially when her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2016, at the age of 6. Since her son’s diagnoses Jessica

has been working diligently to advocate for her son and for others who live with diabetes.

DR. HENRY RODRIEGUEZ

Henry Rodriguez, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida (USF) and the Clinical Director of the USF Diabetes Center. His career has

focused on the prevention and clinical management of type 1 diabetes, always advocating on behalf of those affected by diabetes. He has been a lead investigator in national and international collaborative type 1 diabetes (T1D) studies including the NIH-funded DPT-1 and TrialNet,

and the Helmsley Charitable Trust-funded T1D Exchange, in addition to industry-partnered studies focused on expanding the number of FDA-approved medications for children with type 2 diabetes. He directs the USF TrialNet and T1D Exchange Clinical Centers and he is the immediate past chair of the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study.

His collaborative efforts also include working with others to improve technologies to better

manage diabetes and the transition of young adults from pediatric to adult diabetes care

providers. Dr. Rodriguez has held numerous positions in the American Diabetes Association,

including National Board and Research Grant Review Committee membership. He currently serves on the Scientific Oversight and Legal Advocacy Committees, the Safe at School Working

Group, the ADA Diabetes Forecast Editorial Board and he is President of the local ADA Board.

He is also a longstanding supporter of diabetes camps in the US and abroad, having recently

been elected President of the Florida Camps for Children and Youth with Diabetes. He is current

Chair of the Pediatric Endocrine Society Public Policy Council and co-Chair of the Diabetes

Advocacy Alliance. Dr. Rodriguez’s passion is to improve the lives of those living with diabetes

while pursuing prevention and a cure.

To date, Ryan is the first and only NASCAR driver living with Type 1 diabetes to have run a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race. LOWELL LOHMAN

Lowell Lohman has been a Type 1 Diabetic for 54 years, but as is evidenced by his impressive career, the disease has never slowed him down. Lohman is a member of the CEO Business Alliance and serves on the board of the HADC (Help a Diabetic Child Foundation). Together with his wife Nancy, they have donated nearly $4 million to local charities in the Daytona area and recently received the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce "Lou Fuchs Award for Community Leadership". They also received the Council on Aging "Community's Service Award," the Mayor’s Award for "Civic Engagement" and received both the "Embassy of Hope,” (the Halifax Humane Society’s Humanitarian Award) and the Association of Fundraising Professionals "Non-Profit Champion Award". Lohman has spoken to numerous entrepreneurial associations, as well as at Stetson University, Bethune Cookman University, Daytona State College and the University of Florida Medical School. 

Lohman graduated from Florida State University with a degree in biology and chemistry. Competitive and athletic throughout his life, Lohman was captain of his college baseball team and voted "Most Valuable Player". He even set a school record striking out 19 batters in one game. Lohman quarterbacked a competitive 7-on-7 flag football team, which was named state champions three times and awarded the National Flag Football Championship. Lohman was inducted into the U.S. Touch & Flag Football Hall of Fame and the Florida Flag Football League Hall of Fame. Overall, Lohman played or coached on six state or national championship teams in two different sports. 

Lohman and his wife, along with Lowell’s brothers, Victor and Daryl, and Lowell’s sons, Ty and Brian, were private owners of the largest string of funeral homes and cemeteries in Florida, owning 34 locations. Lohman has owned more than 60 businesses and the majority of those with his family. Son Ty and wife, Nancy have bought and sold more than 24 apartment complexes, totaling more than 4.000 apartments, in Orlando, Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. As an entrepreneur, Lohman’s story and strategies for building multimillion-dollar family businesses are detailed in his recent book, The Lohman Way.

KIM FARMER

Mile High Fitness & Wellness

Kim Farmer is the CEO of Mile High Fitness & Wellness, a corporate wellness organization serving companies of all sizes, based in Denver. She has successfully helped companies integrate holistic wellness programming into the workplace, helping them reduce stress levels and improve performance and productivity. Farmer's presentations inspire motivation and creativity, helping individuals make lasting, intrinsic behavioral changes using preventive wellness techniques. Her energy unites teams and leaders, encouraging organizational culture change, using creative wellness programming. Farmer is the author of books, articles and DVDs on wellness and is a regular contributor to several media outlets on the subject. Farmer also has a strong passion for serving nonprofit organizations with her health and wellness expertise and freely gives her time to community-based, public health efforts. In her off-hours, Farmer, a two-time winner of the Colorado State Open, loves to play tennis, dance, exercise and eat chocolate.

DR. SHEILA GUPTA

Topic: Empowered with Diabetes: Mental Strength & Resilience

Dr. Sheila Gupta is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Florida State University College of Medicine.  She is double boarded in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and Internal Medicine from the University of Miami.  Her primary focus of practice is in thyroid diseases and diabetes.  She has given numerous presentations throughout the state on endocrinology topics and was most recently awarded Florida State University College of Medicine Guardian of the Mission Faculty Award.  Her mission is to provide comprehensive medical care that empowers patients with knowledge and tools to live the highest quality of life.  She has been in private endocrinology practice in Ormond Beach since 2008. 

DR. MICHAEL HALLER

Topic: Discussion on Diabetes

Dr. Michael Haller is a pediatric endocrinologist with a passion for patient care, teaching and research. Haller is a Gainesville native and a proud graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Medicine, Pediatrics Residency, and Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Programs. In addition to serving as the Pediatric Endocrinology Chief and Fellowship Director, Dr. Haller coordinates an active research team focused on the prediction, prevention and reversal of Type 1 diabetes. He is an active investigator in the NIH-funded Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, the NIH TEDDY study and the T1D Exchange. Dr. Haller serves as the Co-PI of the University of Florida TrialNet Clinical Center, as the Chair of the Clinical Implementation Committee for the TEDDY study, and as Vice-President of the Florida Camp for Children and Youth with Diabetes. He was the PI of “first in man” studies aimed at using autologous umbilical cord blood stem cells as a potential therapy for Type 1 diabetes and more recently led a groundbreaking pilot study demonstrating the efficacy of Thymogloublin and Neulasta in patients with established Type 1 diabetes. Dr. Haller now serves as the PI of a major TrialNet study aimed at confirming the efficacy of Thymoglobulin and Neulasta in new-onset Type 1 diabetes patients.  

 

Dr. Haller has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters and in the last five years has received more than $8.5 million dollars in research funding. In 2016, Dr. Haller took the reins from his longtime mentor, Dr. Janet Silverstein, to become the Division Chief of the Pediatric Endocrinology Division at the University of Florida. In 2017, he was awarded both a UF Term Professorship and the prestigious UF Research Foundation Professorship.

 

DR. TIMOTHY S. HARLAN

Topic: Dr. Gourmet

Tulane University, Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine

Timothy S. Harlan practices internal medicine Tulane University School of Medicine. His love of food began as a teenager working in the restaurant business. Starting as a dishwasher, he worked his way up to managing his first restaurant at the age of eighteen and owning his first restaurant at twenty-two. He operated Le Petit Café as a chef/owner until he closed the restaurant to return to school.  

 

After finishing an undergraduate degree in Anthropology, Dr. Harlan went on to study medicine at Emory University. Working as a caterer throughout school, he continued to be involved with food and cooking, but noticed a lack of knowledge in the medical field about nutrition and eating healthy while still eating well.  

 

In medical school, Dr. Harlan wrote It’s Heartly Fare, a food manual for patients with cardiovascular disease. Since then he has published numerous books focusing on translating evidence-based diet and nutrition information for the public. He is the publisher of the popular web site, DrGourmet.com where information garnered from the Mediterranean diet literature is translated in a practical way for use in the American kitchen. 

 

He currently serves as Associate Dean for Clinical Services at Tulane University School of Medicine and is the Executive Director of the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine, the first of its' kind teaching kitchen, operated by a medical school. The center offers an innovative program teaching medical students about diet and lifestyle that bridges the gap between the basic sciences, clinical medicine, the community and culinary education. Medical students work side-by-side in the kitchen with culinary students to teach each other and, most importantly, teach the community and patients how to take what they learn, return to their kitchens and transform their health. 

DR. ANDRIA KLIOZE

Topic: Healthy Lifestyles and Food Choices

Dr. Andria Klioze is an internist in Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach, Florida and is board certified in Obesity Medicine. She graduated from Old Dominion University and attended Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Klioze completed her residency at the University of Florida and was awarded a fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Faculty Development. She co-started the Hospitalist program at The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Gainesville and started the Faculty Development program at the University of Florida. Dr. Klioze is board certified in Obesity Medicine and has a practice focusing on Diabetes and Obesity medicine, with special attention on endovascular ds prevention. She has been in practice for more than 20 years.     

 

EMILY LAFFERTY

Topic: Diabetes and Sports Panel Discussion

College Student, Athlete, Type 1 Diabetic

Emily Lafferty is a 2019 graduate of Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, Florida. She has been a Type 1 diabetic since the age of five and played soccer since she was eleven. Lafferty is an incoming freshman to Berry College in Rome, Georgia, entering as the soccer team's goalkeeper. She will be majoring in Animal Science with a Pre-Vet concentration while minoring in Chemistry and Religion. After graduating from Berry College, Lafferty plans to attend another four-year program, to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, at either the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, Louisiana State University or Auburn University. She plans to use her degrees to become a veterinarian for exotic animals, specifically rhinos and elephants, as well as becoming a youth pastor and a soccer coach. Lafferty was just awarded a Team Type 1 (TT1) scholarship and will now be a global ambassador for the Atlanta-based organization, which strives for equal access to medication, education and empowerment for everyone affected by the disease of diabetes.

 

DR. PIERO POLICICCHIO

Topic: Diabetes and Dental Health

Dr. Piero Policicchio (friends just call him Piero), has been practicing family dentistry in Holland, Michigan and surrounding cities for more than 30 years. In treating patients, Dr. Policicchio uses cutting-edge technology, combined with patient education and high-level patient involvement.

 

Born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, Dr. Policicchio received his degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. He is the inventor of Dental Air Force and CEO of Air Force, Inc. His latest clinical trial studies, using his Dental Air Force system versus toothbrush and floss on diabetic patients. showed a reduction in HbA1c (diabetic blood marker) by over 1% in conjunction with periodontal therapy. Dr. Policicchio has developed a periodontal program to help with pathogens that standard protocols have not been able to eradicate. Dr. Policicchio is passionate when he speaks about the most devastating disease on the planet - periodontal disease.

He has published many articles on periodontal health as it relates to heart disease, respiratory health, diabetes, strokes and other systemic diseases. He is the former Executive Editor for the "Journal of Experimental Dental Science,” and contributing author to "Hospital Infection Control: Clinical Guidelines".  He is also the author of Never Brush Your Teeth Again! and is an international speaker.

 

DR. HENRY RODRIGUEZ

Topic: Current Trends in Research

University of South Florida

Henry Rodriguez, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida (USF) and the Clinical Director of the USF Diabetes Center. His career has

focused on the prevention and clinical management of Type 1 diabetes, always advocating on behalf of those affected by diabetes. He has been a lead investigator in national and international collaborative Type 1 diabetes (T1D) studies, including the NIH-funded DPT-1 and TrialNet,

and the Helmsley Charitable Trust-funded T1D Exchange, in addition to industry-partnered studies focused on expanding the number of FDA-approved medications for children with Type 2 diabetes. He directs the USF TrialNet and T1D Exchange Clinical Centers and he is the immediate past chair of the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study.

His collaborative efforts also include working with others to improve technologies to better

manage diabetes and the transition of young adults from pediatric to adult diabetes care

providers. Dr. Rodriguez has held numerous positions in the American Diabetes Association,

including National Board and Research Grant Review Committee membership. He currently serves on the Scientific Oversight and Legal Advocacy Committees, the Safe at School Working

Group, the ADA Diabetes Forecast Editorial Board and he is President of the local ADA Board.

He is also a longstanding supporter of diabetes camps in the US and abroad, having recently

been elected President of the Florida Camps for Children and Youth with Diabetes. He is current

Chair of the Pediatric Endocrine Society Public Policy Council and Co-Chair of the Diabetes

Advocacy Alliance. Dr. Rodriguez’s passion is to improve the lives of those living with diabetes

while pursuing prevention and a cure.

 

JANET RODRIQUEZ, RN, BSN, CDE

Topic: Peer Pressure, School, & Survival 

University of South Florida Diabetes Center

Janet Rodriquez, RN, BSN, CDE is a licensed Registered Nurse, Certified Diabetes Educator, and Insulin Pump & CGM Specialist with the University of South Florida Diabetes Center. She obtained her Nursing diploma from Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from San Francisco State University. Her nursing career began as Staff Nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in the pediatric intensive care unit, followed by positions in nursing management at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Children's Hospital of San Francisco, and California Pacific Medical Center. She transitioned to quality improvement and then to diabetes education.  Rodriquez is a certified trainer for all insulin pump and CGM devices, providing education to pediatric and adult patients, their families and health care professionals. She serves as Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator for trials in diabetes technologies, including hybrid-closed-loop systems. 

 

Rodriquez has been an active supporter of diabetes camps since the 1990s, serving at camps in California, Indiana and Florida. She staffs the Florida Diabetes Camps, the Sam Fuld Sports, Family and Adventure Camps and serves as a faculty member at the annual Children with Diabetes, Friend for Life Conference.

 

MARK SPIVEY, MA, LCSW 

Topic: Peer Pressure, School, & Survival 

Clinical Counselor, Ordained Minister

Spivey is a seminary-prepared, ordained minister and a licensed professional clinical counselor. He holds Masters Degrees in the fields of theology, philosophy and clinical social work, a combination of education and training that enables him to provide effective spiritual and clinical psychotherapeutic care. Spivey has more than 35 years of experience in guiding people through life's problems, unexpected changes and the tough times that losses bring.

 

Spivey is a passionate public speaker and an affable professional counselor. He is dedicated to helping people identify the deceptive brain beliefs responsible for the self-destructive behavioral choices that interfere with optimal health and personal wellness goals.

 

SARAH WESTEN, PH.D.

Topic: Fear of Hypoglycemia

University of Florida

Sarah Westen, Ph.D., is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida. Dr. Westen obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Florida in 2017 with a specialty in pediatric psychology. She completed her clinical internship at the University of Florida Health Science Center, focused on underserved children with chronic illnesses. Dr. Westen was a JDRF National Psychology Fellow at the University of Florida and received training through mentorship in the UF Diabetes Institute, Department of Pediatrics and Department of Clinical and Health Psychology. She currently serves in various national leadership roles including as Chair of the Diabetes Special Interest Group of the American Psychological Association’s Division 54 (Society of Pediatric Psychology) and she is also a member of the JDRF Psychosocial Advisory Committee.

 

COACH RICK ZUCCHI

Topic: Diabetes and Sports Panel Discussion

NCAA Coach, UEFA-FIGC Goalkeeper, FIFA Football Medicine

Born in the UK (Llandudno, North Wales) in 1967, Coach Zucchi lived in Rome from the age of 12. He moved to this country in 1993 and have been a proud United States citizen since 2002. He is married and has two children Blake (8) and Gabriella (6).

 

Zucchi has been coaching soccer since 1990 and holds the highest Goalkeeper license worldwide, the UEFA-FIGC pro-keeper diploma and is an NCAA-certified soccer coach. He has all levels of Goalkeeper diplomas with the United Soccer Coaches and an exclusive FIFA Football (soccer) Medicine diploma. Zucchi has worked with several local youth soccer clubs in Volusia County and owns and operates the ZEE Goalkeeper Academy, LLC. The academy works with more than 50 goalkeepers from all over the country and is the largest year-round GK school of its kind in North America. 

Zucchi has worked with several athletes with Type 1 diabetes, helping them reach their goals. Closing the gap has been a challenge for him, but has done this work with passion and will continue to do so in the future. Zucchi was diagnosed with diabetes (Type 2) in 2013 and has been successfully controlling it ever since. His diagnosis got him even more involved with helping diabetic children, as he could empathize with the challenges and victories the disease presents.
